Abstract:
Studies on English versions of Hongloumeng are mostly commentary, which are usually subjective, so these studies are limited in depth and breadth. With the Chinese-English parallel corpus of Hongloumeng, researchers can get the numbers of tokens, type/token ratio, mean word length, high-frequency word lists, mean sentence length, etc, and discover their different stylistic features. On the whole, Hawkes’ version demonstrates more explicitation traits than Yangs’ version, which helps western readers comprehend and accept this literary work. Instead, Yangs’ version is more faithful to the source text, and emphasizes the literariness of target text, so it is more expressive.
