Matthew Arnold and Theory of “Culture and Anarchy”

Matthew Arnold is the forefather of British New Left and British Cultural Studies. “Traditional culture” is the core of his thought. Theoretical value of “Culture and Anarchy” is full of richness. Arnold thinks that the “remnant” or “organic intellectual” of “Culture and Anarchy ” only takes the responsibility of guarding serious culture, that is the moment of “cultural hegemony”, which takes a positive understanding towards “popular culture”, and which makes a great contribution to British Cultural Studies and British Cultural Marxism.
