Abstract:
Unlike the traditional novel which organizes a plot to push forward the progress of a novel,
Mrs. Dalloway is not organized in a linear way. Props such as the party, Big Ben play a vital role in the structuring of the novel. Woolf depicts every character's stream of consciousness around these props and thus compares and reveals the characters’ different inner worlds and personalities. As a result, the portraying of the characters is three-dimensional and complete. The novel becomes poetical. However, the readers are not very pleased with and don’t understand well this kind of stream-of-consciousness novels.
