Abstract: “Skopos theory” and “adequacy” are a new dynamic perspective for literary translation criticism put forward by the functionalist translation theories in Germany. They help critics analyze the macro factors and micro factors which affect a translator’s purpose, thus achieving objective and fair evaluation. The criticism of The Aphorisms of Confucius translated by Lin Yutang is a case in point.
